Who we are. CyrusMeowGreat is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Southern California. We publish Cyrus: SoCal Free Events, a free, ad-free guide to free, family-friendly public events in Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. Every event we list links back to the organizer’s own page.
What the crawler does. CyrusMeowGreatBot reads the public event pages and calendar feeds of cities, libraries, parks, museums, and community organizations so that we can list their free events accurately — the date, the time, the venue, and the organizer’s own statement that the event is free — and check them again before they appear. It publishes nothing itself; a person reviews every event before it is listed.
How it identifies itself. Every request carries this user agent string and a working contact address:
CyrusMeowGreatBot/1.0 (+https://cyrusmeowgreat.org/bot)
How it behaves.
- It reads your
robots.txtbefore anything else and obeys it, includingCrawl-delay. If your robots file disallows us, we do not fetch. - It makes one request at a time and waits at least two seconds between requests to the same site. If a site answers 429 or 503, it honors the Retry-After header and makes no further requests to that site that day.
- Its normal cadence per source is a weekly discovery pass, a weekly re-check of pages we already list, and one check a day before we publish. An operator may run a re-check by hand; it uses the same identity and rules.
- It does not log in, submit forms, solve challenges, or use a proxy. It stores the text of the pages it read as evidence for a listing, and nothing else.
To reach a human. Email cyrus@cyrusmeowgreat.org. If you would rather we did not read your site, tell us and we stop. If you publish a calendar feed (.ics, RSS, or an API) you would prefer we use, we switch to it.
